The launch of the Digital Health & Health Data Strategy 2025–2030 was a landmark moment for Malta’s healthcare sector, bringing together leaders and experts to shape the future of health data and digital innovation.
A Day of Insight and Collaboration
The event opened with a networking lunch, setting the stage for meaningful conversations among stakeholders. The formal programme began with an inspiring address by Hon. Mr. Jo Etienne Abela, Minister for Health & Active Ageing, who underscored the government’s commitment to a patient-centred, data-driven healthcare system in alignment with the Government’s Vision 2050.
Following this, Mr. Euchar Sultana, Chief Information Officer at the Ministry for Health & Active Ageing, presented the strategy’s core pillars. His presentation highlighted the 6 objectives, 7 core thematic areas and 28 actions as the strategic foundation for the next five years.
Panel Discussion: Global Perspectives and Local Action
One of the most engaging segments was the panel discussion featuring leading voices in health informatics and policy:
- Dr. Hugo Agius Muscat – Specialist in Digital Health
- Mr. Everton Santos – Vice President of International, KLAS Research
- Ms. Helen Caton-Peters – Senior Policy & Technical Officer, World Health Organization
- Mr. Kai Kewley – Technical Specialist, SNOMED CT
- Dr. Renzo Degabriele – Permanent Secretary – Active Ageing, Ministry for Health & Active Ageing
The panel explored critical themes such as international standards adoption, strategies for ensuring secure, seamless data exchange across systems and artificial intelligence in health and care. This event was also complemented with audience engagement activities and excellent questions from the attendees.
Closing Reflections
The day concluded with a closing speech by Mr. Joseph Chetcuti, Permanent Secretary (Health), who emphasised collaboration as the key to turning this strategy into reality. His remarks reinforced the importance of stakeholder engagement during the upcoming public consultation phase.
